Why I care about colon cancer
Colon cancer is such a preventable disease, but it has still taken 3 family members from us. My grandmother's brother Freeman was the first in our family to sucumb to this diesease. My Uncle Pig (as I called him), my dad's brother, who meant the absolute world to me was the second. I lost my dad suddenly when I was 16 years old, but looking at Uncle Pig was just like looking at dad. They both had huge hearts and would help anyone that needed it - anyone - and that is not an exaggeration.
When my brother Ben was diagnosed at the age of 46, it shocked us - knowing what I know now about this disease, it shouldn't have. The cancer was stage 3 when diagnosed and he fought almost 7 years until he passed away almost 2 years ago. I'm thankful for the time we had, but it has left a void in our family that no one can fill. He was headstrong and stubborn, but had a big soft heart that he tried to hide.
I have formed this team to help raise awareness about this preventable disease. Let's face it, it's not pleasant to have a colonoscopy, but it is far better than what I witnessed Ben and my uncles go through.
I hope you will come out and run or walk with Team Benny and the Jets. I think he would be proud that we are trying to save lives together.
